Closed and Open Paintings

I was just reading yesterday about closed and open pictures. I hope I get this the right way around.

An open picture has objects touching the sides as if there is more going on beyond the page.

I have made lots of designs for Society6 out of one big painting. Those individual designs are all examples of an open painting.

I think I prefer them like this.

This is the whole painting:

Which do you like best? Did you know about open and closed paintings?

Here’s another example:

And here are the open ones:

See if you can make more pictures with one big one. Happy creating! 🎨

Child’s Play

I forgot to take pictures of some artwork the kids from down the street did.

The important thing is they left huge globs of bright paint around.

I cleaned it all up not wasting a morsel. What a quick and easy way to gain three more paintings. Three designs. Three splats that were not before. And now they be.

No paintbrushes needed just press the paper down and mop up.

There were one or two more that need some added extras for another day.

The good thing about this is you don’t need to fuss about composition or colors that match. Just play.

Happy creating!

Beach House Paintings

Today I handed over 6 paintings for my friend’s beach house. It was pretty nerve-wracking doing so many and not wanting to mess them up.

Here’s what they looked like early on:

And left aside for a bit they were then ready for a bit of a makeover:

I’d never tried painting or even drawing flip flops before. I accidentally made the top half too wide. They might just haunt me lol.

Specialist Feet Flip Flops

Whose feet are they
That fit snug in such ghastly shoes?
Surely one ought to cover such magnificent beasts more profoundly.
A sneaker, Sir? Would do the trick.
You suggest not I.
But why?
May we not all run wild and free?
With feet as such
One might have other more pressing oddities to cast the eye over.
Just do not cast eyes.
Keep your eyes uncasted
Encased in sun shades
Always looking up.

Catherine Johnson

What an odd poem from the recesses of my mind. Anyone else got a flip flop poem?

Sheep Collage

Hi folks!

Good news. The tooth was a baby tooth and filling was tiny. Lesson learned no harm done – phew!

I feel a new addiction coming on. Collage is like scrapbooking so I’m in heaven doing it. Don’t make me get out my scrapbooks lol.

I actually remembered to take pictures.

Maybe it’s easier to start with the background. I forgot you’re not supposed to put the main object in the centre. That’s true in photos. Is that true for pictures too?

Depending on how intricate you want it to look, keep an eye out for magazines with trees in. It was so handy to cover big spaces.

One suggestion for beginners is work from the top down because of overlap of paper.

Materials:

Magazine papers
Scrapbook paper
Felt

Have a go it’s fun!

Splat!

Undercover sheep
Missed the mark
Splatted!

I intended to add sheep but they were rubbish and I have a renewed enthusiasm for splatters.

Maybe the sheep will come back in the Spring 🐑. Or I’ll stick to charcoal sketches of them. Don’t be afraid to change your mind.

Happy creating!

Stamping Fun

So here’s a couple of art journal pages from the #artmarks30daychallenge:

I stamped the whole page before adding anything else. Now I think it’s too stampy and the composition is rubbish. Composition practise is the nearest I’ll come to having a New Year’s resolution. I do like the paper sheep but with a busy background as well they are too much. Do you agree? I used my daughter’s stamps and some kids’ paint she doesn’t want.

This is upside down and I actually prefer the composition but now the sheep is upside down. This is the advantage to pure abstract you can turn them around any way after they are done. Most of this is done with brusho watercolors.

Today’s page was done early because it’s my birthday and I have fun stuff planned (lunch out and a movie later 👌😀)so here it is:

I discovered this great mixed media artist a couple of days ago and she makes beautiful art journal pages. I haven’t watched this entire video I jumped to different places but it is very cool. It makes me want to add things to my art supply shopping list 😉

Happy creating!

Creative Challenges

It’s a new year

Time for some new ideas!

As if by magic my browsing stumbled across a most magnificent mixed media artist this morning.

Rae Missigman

She just happens to be starting an art marks challenge today.

It sounds fun, easy and creative. Anyone fancy that? Check out her website it is full of creative goodies.

Maybe this year I will blog about challenges I find or even make up a challenge myself.

For example stamping using kids’ stamps might be a fun one.

I like the idea of setting a timer. The urgency might make the pictures a bit crazy. 😝

Happy creating!

Happy Valentine’s Day!

20160213_162657

There’s a family on YouTube that my daughter is addicted to watching and the other day they were making a melted crayon heart craft. So she wanted to make one. Then her brother decides he wants one too.

There’s only Phil without a Valentine picture lol

I actually prefer an earlier version

We went to the movies to watch Brooklyn. What a great movie for Valentine’s. Also great for ex-pats.

Wishing everyone a lovely day today 💜

Art in the Library

As I ponder how often to post this year and what to focus on (I’m thinking fun challenges) I’m sharing a photo of my artwork in Kingsville library. It’s going to be up there for a month like my own personal art gallery 😉

You’ve got to get excited about the little things it’s January. And a bit more excitement. I actually remembered to wear a scarf today. So many and I always forget 😁

Have a great week! I’ll post again on Friday.
